Many people find old coins while cleaning out drawers, attics, and the like. Every day here at Old Mint the phone rings with a question about a “rare” coin somebody found in their antique desk or worse, in the ground. To help guide you in what to look for I have compiled a list of items that I would look for in a pile of coins. This is a very simple list, and does not take condition much into account. If you have a coin that is absolutely blazing new, she can be worth money, even if she is a common date, conversely a rare date that has been cleaned in any way or damaged can be hugely devalued. Indian Cents 1859 to 1877 : all dates, but the big kahuna is the 1877 Lincoln Cents 1909: all S mint Mark, specifically the 1909-S with a small VDB at 6:00 on the reverse. 1910-1914 Mint Marked Coins 1922 1931-S Buffalo Nickels: Dates must be clear 1913 all types 1914-1926 Mint Marked coins Mercury Dimes 1916-D 1921 1921-D 1925-D 1928-D 1931-D Standing Liberty Quarters- Any coin with a clear date and a fully outlined shield on the obverse. The 1916 to 1920 are goodies in this condition. The 1927-S is VERY condition specific, she can be worth 50 cents or several hundred dollars depending on how nice she looks. Washington Quarters 1932-D 1932-S Walking Liberty Halves 1916 1917- All types and Mints 1919 All Mints 1921 All Mints 1923-S 1938-D Yes we buy coins.
